Top 10 Christmas Jumpers

Oh look, Abbie nearly gave up on her blog, AGAIN! But no, I'm still here, just about.

Anyway, with Christmas getting super close I keep thinking about Christmas jumpers, and although I have no money to buy another one (#studentlife) I found some good ones I thought I would share.

Student Meals For One

A few days ago I started looking online for meal ideas for uni but most of the pages I found weren't really what I was looking for. They seemed to either be fancy meals that required an entire herbs and spices cupboard and every utensil on the planet, or things like "add bacon to your instant noodle", erm no thanks. So after some help from my mum I have put together a list of decent easy meals I can do when I'm feeling lazy at uni.

Omelette
Cheese on toast
Cous cous
Vegetable stir fry
Fish finger sandwich
Tuna pasta mayo
Potato and vegetable tray bake
Quesadillas
Chick pea salad
Beans on toast
Breakfast bagel
Breakfast Bagel (here)
Soup
Jacket potato
Scrambled egg on toast
Granola
Pancakes
Frittata
Pitta bread pizza
Nachos
Falafel
Sweet potato wedges
Stuffed courgette
Porridge
All day full English breakfast
Stuffed potato skins
Toasties
Pizza bagel
Cheesy chips
Fajitas

I know it's also really nice to cook for flat mates or other friends so here is few ideas of things you can cook when there's more than one of you (or if there is just one of you but don't make a big one and eat it all at once!)

Spaghetti bolognese
Chilli con carne
Bolognese pasta bake (here)
Lasagne
Chicken pasta bake
Chicken Pasta Bake
Curry and rice
Cottage pie

Good luck to everyone going to uni, and good luck to everyone who isn't and has adulthood even sooner than us students!

English Summer Lookbook

An English summer can be a little less summery than most of us would like so here are some pictures, I convinced Henry to take and edit, of me attempting to be summery.

Shirt: Topshop, Jeans: Topshop, Shoes: Sketchers, Necklace: Topshop, Choker: Topshop (I think), Bracelet: Primark

Jumper: Hollister, Shorts: Primark, Shoes: Vans, Choker: Topshop (again, I think)

Body: Primark, Skirt: Primark, Shoes: Vans, Necklaces: both unknown

I promise I do buy clothes from shops other than Topshop and Primark!

What's on my iPhone?

As promised by my cheeky Twitter poll, and because I'm getting a new phone soon, here's a little What's on my iPhone.

I have an iPhone 5 and recently I have been keeping it extremely organised.

So this is my home screen and it's pretty standard, it's just a picture I found on Pinterest and thought was cute soooo.

The first page on my phone is pretty empty because I like to see the background picture and at the moment it's a gross picture of me and Henry being cute at Alton Water, edited with Instasize to make it fit because it's a landscape picture.

The bar at the bottom just contains the basic stuff of messages, Twitter (@abbievord), clock and Safari because these are some of my most used things and ones I want to be able to get to quickly.

The first page also has phone and settings at the top along with YouTube and Spotify because that's where I listen to most of my music when I'm listening on my phone rather than my iPod.

My second page is full of folder so I know where everything is and it is very satisfying haha. I have:

News: BBC News so I know what the hell is going on in the world, BBC Weather and Weather that comes on the iPhone (I like to compare because they never say the same thing) and Google Maps because you got to know where you are, well I do anyway. It would make more sense to be in the travel folder but oh well.

Health: Fitbit so I can keep track of my steps etc on my Fitbit Charge, and Sleep Cycle which is an awesome app that monitors your sleep and then wakes you up during your lightest sleep within a 30 window to help you wake up feeling the best (hope that made sense).

Artsy: Tumblr because ya'no Tumblr is awesome (apologetic-silence), Tumbeltail because its a lot easier to add to your queue than using the normal tumblr app, and Pinterest where I get lots of cool pictures and recipes etc.

Travel: Citymapper because bae lives in London and I always have no idea where I'm going when I go see him, Trainline to get rains to go see bae, and Greater Anglia for the same reason I suppose, I don't really need them both.

Finance: Tesco Mobile, Co Op Bank and More Than to check my car's black box lol.

TV: BBC iPlayer, All 4 mainly for Made in Chelsea, My 5 mainly for Big Brother, and Netflix mainly for Pretty Little Liars.

Pokemon (aka games but obviously Pokemon is the most important): Sudoku because I'm super smart, techno kitten, word brain themes, and of course Pokemon GO.

Life: The standard Reminders and Notes that are full of my attempt to organise my life, Forest which in short stops you using your phone for a certain amount of time to help you study and then you grow virtual trees, Calculator and Calender, Productive which is supposed to help me create habits like cleaning but if I'm honest, doesn't work for me, and Countdown that currently only serves the purpose of telling me how long until I move to uni!

Photography: Instagram (abbievord), Snapchat (abikinzz), Photos, Camera, Photo Editor even though I get Henry to edit all my photos properly for me, Layout for Instagram for the few times I ever want it, and Instasize to make all shape photos fit on instagram.

Social: Facetime for when bae and I live far away from each other (aka most of the time), Whatsapp even though I never use it, Contacts, Facebook, Messenger and Email.

On the last page I literally just have all the other iPhone stuff that no one uses and the Ipswich Pigs Gone Wild app to find all the pigs (if you live in Ipswich you will know what I mean, if you don't then you are probably very confused and think we just have pigs standing around the place - which we do).

Breakfast Bagel

This is more of an idea than a recipe because I'm sure most of you can fry bacon and an egg.

Ingredients:

  • Sliced bagel
  • 2 rashes of back bacon
  • 1 large egg
  • Butter
  • Tomato or brown sauce (optional)
Method:
  1. Lightly oil a frying pan and start frying the bacon
  2. Crack open an egg into the same pan and try to keep it circular (you may want to use an egg ring)
  3. Once the egg has started cooking pierce the yolk and mix it with the white before flipping the egg
  4. Lightly toast both halves of the bagel
  5. Butter one half of the toasted bagel
  6. Place the bacon and egg on the buttered half of the bagel and then top with sauce if you wish to.
Serve with water for a healthy start to the day and then sit in front of the TV telling yourself that you aren't actually enjoying Jeremy Kyle (but of course you are).

Bolognese Pasta Bake

(Serves 4)

Ingredients:

  • 200g penne or fusilli pasta
  • 500g beef mince
  • 500g tomato pasata
  • 1 tbsp tomato puree
  • 1 onion (chopped finely)
  • 1 garlic clove (chopped finely or crushed)
  • 1 red pepper (chopped)
  • 2 large carrots (grated)
  • 50g lentils
  • 50g cheddar cheese (grated)
  • seasoning
Method:
  1. Pre-heat oven to 200°c or 180° fan
  2. Lightly oil a large frying pan and fry the onion and garlic until the onions begin to colour
  3. Place the mince in the pan and cook with the onions and garlic
  4. Boil pasta in large saucepan with lightly salted water
  5. Once mine has browned, put in pepper and carrot and cook for 5 minutes
  6. Add the past, puree, lentils and seasoning (I recommend salt, pepper, basil and oregano - fresh or dried) and leave to simmer for about 10 minutes
  7. Drain the pasta (it doesn't matter if it is not cooked through just yet) and mix into the large frying pan with the rest of the ingredients
  8. Pour or spoon the mix into a large baking dish and top with cheese
  9. Place in oven for 15-20 minutes, or until cheese is bubbling
  10. Serve with a side salad

Health and Fitness for Busy People

Just a few little things I sometimes do to keep myself fit and healthy.

  • Ski sit while you brush your teeth - that's 4 minutes of ski sit a day
  • Waiting for the kettle to boil, toast to pop up or something in the microwave? Do some squats
  • Walk EVERYWHERE
  • Quick workouts - you can find so many super quick workouts out literally last like 5 minutes, or just make something up yourself
  • When waiting for a train, walk up and down the platform - you might look a bit weird but it will be worth it when you have fab calves
  • When waiting for a bus walk or jog on the spot - but again, you may look a little odd
  • I highly recommend a Fitbit to track how many steps you do in a day (it is recommended you do about 10,000).

A - Z Study Tips

A - Area. Make sure you have a large, open, clean, tidy, quiet area in order to study. Although copying a few notes might be able to be done in front of the TV on the sofa, that is not the place to write a timed essay.
B - Breaks. Taking regular breaks while studying is essential. You could refill your snack bowl, go buy more snacks, 5 minute phone call with bae who is also having a study break, have a wank, what ever floats your boat.
C - Colour coding. I don't understand how anyone can possibly study without the use of colour, it makes you more likely to be able to visualise the page. Get yourself some highlighters, colouring pencils, fine liners, sharpies, post it notes, pictures, anything that isn't black and white.
D - Deadlines. DO NOT MISS DEADLINES! Depending on whether you're at a laid back sixth form or a strict (any) university, missing a deadline is never good. You will either be behind on work and then keep missing later deadlines because you're so behind, or just not get a grade for that piece of work. Record all your deadlines so you know exactly what is due in when.
E - Essays. Not easy things to write, but good planning, structure and time management will pull you through. Timing yourself speed writing if writing quickly isn't something that comes naturally to you.
F - Focus. I know it's difficult but stay focus and do not get distracted. Tell your family that you are studying and to not bother you for two hours, they wont mind.
G - Group chats. Apparently not all schools do this but I have no idea why because it's often a life saver. Make group chats on Facebook or iMessage or WhatsApp with all the people in one of your classes and then whenever someone has a question about what the homework, if your teacher is in or to bitch about the class for that subject.
H - Hand writing. No matter how much you tell yourself that you don't get marked on your hand writing in the exam, you do. Especially for essays. One, if an examiner can't read something you've written you can't get the mark for it, and two, if an examiner isn't sure if your work is a B or an A, having well presented work with decent handwriting might just be enough to give you that extra point that pushes you up a grade.
I - iPhone (or any smart phone really but the I was there). Download the app 'Focus' that stops you using your phone while studying and you can grow pretty trees while you're busy.
J - Junk. Or lack of. Make sure there isn't loads of junk and clutter around your study area because it will distract you from your work.
K - Key words. Keep track of all the key words for all your subjects. I tend to highlight them all in my notes and textbooks, all in the same colour, and then make a glossary of them all as well, but just one or the other is pretty good.
L - Laptop. For GCSEs it's not really essential but would be good, but A Levels and university it's pretty much have a laptop or fail. It doesn't need anything fancy, as long as you've got internet and word you probably wont die.
M - Music. I find I either need complete silence or some music, I can't have a little background noise, so if there is any I put some music on. The best music to listen to while studying is music with no lyrics. Spotify has some great studying playlists.
N - Note taking. Try to keep your notes neat so that you can easily look back at them, but remember when in a lesson or lecture or whatever that you are in a rush, these notes do not need to be perfect, they can be re-written. Make sure you understand what you are being taught, you can make pretty notes to help you remember it later.
O - Organise. You will never get good grades if you have no idea where all your stuff is, or where you need to be when. People say they don't need a folder or their class timetable, but they are usually the ones who don't get the best grades.
P - Practice. I hate to say it but the best way to get it all into your head is to just keep practising essays over and over and over and over again.
Q - Quiet. You wont be able to work to the best of your ability is a loud place, coffee shops may be cute but they aren't necessarily the best place to get your homework done.
R - Reading/ Outside reading for your subjects is a brilliant way at making sure you get something a little extra into your exams to wow the examiner.
S - Stress. There is no doubt that to get the best possible grades you will have to go through a little bit of stress, but not too much. One of the best ways to manage your stress levels is to exercise, make yourself go out for a run and you will forget all about your work.
T - Timetable. Different types of timetable work best for different people, you might like to have it set out so you know what you should be doing every hour or you can just have to so that you know what needs to be done by the end of each day, but having some sort of schedule is essential.
U - Under pressure. Being under a small bit of pressure can be good for you because it will hopefully motivate you to get through this shit, but too much pressure can mean you get too stressed and flop.
V - Victory. The best motivation is to imagine what it will feel like at the end when you have got your grades and won the stupid exam system.
W - Water. Both when studying and when you are not, you need to drink plenty of water at all times to keep you healthy, awake and concentrated.
X - Explain. I might sound a bit like a teacher here but in exams make sure you really explain all your points in lots of detail because the examiner doesn't know what you're thinking, only what you have written.
Y - Yummy. Whenever you study, make sure to have a few snacks nearby so that if you do get hungry, you have some thing to get you through.
Z - Zzz. Make sure you get enough sleep or you will be exhausted and nothing will work!

Evening Pamper Session

  1. The first thing I will do when planning a pamper session is grab myself a little snack and myself a cup of tea, usually lemon green tea.
  2. I then go to the bathroom where I start by putting on some music, light some candles, and rummage through my massive lush collection to see what I fancy having a bath with.
  3. My first cleanse is usually the Clean&Clear Cleansing Lotion for sensitive skin and then I will put on a face mask.
  4. While the face mask is doing its stuff I will run the bath and watch a little YouTube video or something, then rinse the mask off and do a quick face scrub before popping into the bath.
  5. While in the bath I use a body wash (currently working my way through Lush's Sweetie Pie Shower Jelly) and a hair treatment.
  6. Once I'm done in the bath and in my pyjamas I do my second cleanse using the Nivea 2 in 1 Cleanser and Toner, followed by a bit of bio oil around my nose area, moisturiser and a cheeky bit of Lush's Charity Pot (shouldn't really be used on the face so not recommended regularly or if you have sensitive skin).
  7. Then I will brush my teeth, use Lush's Popcorn lip scrub and a lip balm.
  8. My hair is then the next thing to tackle. I swear by the TRESemme Heat Defence Styling Spray and then I blow dry my hair.
  9. I then attempt to deal with my eczema and dry skin. I start with one of the most amazing products I have ever owned, the Honeybee Natural Beauty Vitamin A Cream for eczema prone skin. Honeybee Natural Beauty is a local company to me in Suffolk that I discovered at a fayre in Woodbridge. It's not overally expensive and it's worth every penny. I just put this creme on my problematic areas such as the back of my knees. This is followed by a body butter, usually one from The Body Shop.
  10. I will then probably do a little bit of colouring for 20 minutes to keep chill and then get into bed.
  11. When I get into bed I use the Avon Planet Spa Sleep Serenity Pillow Mist because it helps me sleep and the I will either read my current book or a couple of articles from either The Economist or Geographical Magazine before dozing off to sleep.

Allbums I'm Loving

My number one album at the moment is definitely Around the World and Back by State Champs. There isn't a song on it I don't like! My favourite songs would have to be 'Secrets', 'Losing Myself', 'All You Are Is History', 'All or Nothing' and 'Around the World and Back'. I first found the band when listening to the Spotify playlist Positively Pop Punk.
Another album I keep finding myself playing is James Bay's Chaos and the Calm. It's not my usual teenage angst music but it's great background music, especially when me and Henry are cooking and eating dinner! It's one of those albums that no one can possibly be offended by.

Going back to my usual tunes, it's no surprise that a band as amazing as Panic! at the Disco is in there with the classic Too Weird To Live, Too Rare To Die. My favourites have got to be 'This is Gospel ' and 'Miss Jackson' because you can't argue that they aren't two of the best songs out there.
Another one that shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who knows me is Lower Than Atlantis with their album named after themselves, Lower Than Atlantis (The Black Edition). The original edition of this album is fab f course but the Black Edition has some songs that really make it worth the second release such as 'The Reason' and their cover of 'A Thousand Miles'.
I thought to finish I would go with something really not me. At first when Jess Glynne came around I was really interested but I found that actually I enjoyed lots of her songs and so gave the whole album a listen one day while I was tidying my room and I have listened to it many times since.
